Dealing with hail in South Jersey, and the East Coast more generally, is almost a given during the summer months. Although there are some measures you can take to try to mitigate any damage as much as possible, the truth is that sometimes, some dings and dents to your home’s roof are going to be inevitable.

If you currently suspect that your roof has sustained some hail damage, there are signs you can look for when investigating. Courtesy of Alan Cherry’s Exteriors, your premier roofing contractors in Deptford Township, NJ, have a look at some of these common red flags to see if your roof has experienced any storm damage this summer season.

Dents in Your Gutters, Downspouts, or Gutter Screens

Being that they are often manufactured from reasonably pliant metals, your gutters and downspouts should be the first place to look for hailstorm damage. Heavy hail will often produce small tell-tale dents in the metal.

Cracks in Your Roof

Cracks in your roof shingles can appear due to hail damage or a number of other possible causes. Either way, they are still a sign that your roof is in need of proper repair and maintenance. Also, keep in mind that cracks in your roof will not always be visible to the naked eye — you may have to run your bare hands over your roof to determine the presence of any cracks or fractures.

Exposed Roofing

If your home has asphalt roofing, missing chunks from your roof are a strong indication of hail damage. Sometimes, you will be able to see the underlying material where the asphalt granules were knocked out — at other times, your roof may have spots that have been worn smooth that need to be addressed.

Minor Bruising

When we talk about “bruising,” we’re referring to damage similar to denting or pockmarking, but even smaller. To check if your roof has bruising from hail storms, try feeling along the roof’s surface for any bumps or dimples. If the bruising is sufficiently minor, you might not need to do anything about it; but it can still help you predict the chances of future wear and tear. If the dimples have any give when you press on them with your hands, your roof’s shingles may be starting to decay.
